The Effectiveness of the Learning Cycle 5E Model in Optimizing Students' Higher Order Thinking Skills in Statistics Learning

Abstract

The ability of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is an important competency that needs to be developed in mathematics learning, especially in statistics material. However, students' HOTS abilities are still relatively low because the learning tends to be teacher-centered. This study aims to determine the difference in HOTS abilities between students who learn using the 5E Learning Cycle model and conventional learning, as well as to analyze the effectiveness of the model in optimizing students' HOTS. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design of the pretest-posttest control group design type. The research sample consisted of 30 students from the experimental class and 27 students from the control class. Data were collected thru HOTS tests that included analysis (C4), evaluation (C5), and creation (C6) indicators, and then analyzed using the Independent Sample T-Test and N-Gain. The research results show that there is a significant difference between the HOTS abilities of students in the experimental class and the control class with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. The average posttest score of the experimental class (86.00) was Higher than that of the control class (68.43). Additionally, the N-Gain score of the experimental class (0.67) was Higher than that of the control class (0.39). The research results show that the 5E Learning Cycle model is effective in optimizing students' HOTS in statistics material.
